The value of lithium
Market demand for lithium (Li) has increased significantly over the last few years, partly because Li is used in the production of batteries for electric cars and energy storage batteries. The typical passenger electric car contains 22 pounds of lithium.
The majority of lithium production is predominantly from three countries – Chile, Australia and Argentina. However, several lithium projects are currently evaluated for development in North America. Lithium is typically produced from three types of projects – brines in solars (salars), hardrock as a spodumene concentrate, and clay deposits.
The extraction and production of lithium involve complex metallurgy and processing for the successful recovery of lithium compounds – typically lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide.
