From Engineering to Execution: Shaping the Future of Gas Processing at the 2026 GPA Midstream Convention

Meeting these challenges requires more than strong technical design alone. Decisions made during early process engineering influence everything from equipment selection and constructability to procurement strategies, project schedules, and long-term operational performance. As facilities become larger and more integrated, success depends on close coordination between engineering, procurement, project controls, and execution teams.

At Samuel Engineering, our Process Engineering Team is backed by a few different multi-disciplinary teams spanning mechanical, electrical, civil, and automation engineering, along with in-house procurement, project controls, and EPCM capabilities. This integrated approach supports projects across the gas processing value chain, from cryogenic plants and NGL recovery facilities to compression and pipeline infrastructure, helping align engineering decisions with successful project execution

From Engineering to Execution

Process engineering serves as the foundation of every successful gas processing project. Through PFDs, P&IDs, process modeling, equipment sizing, and hydraulic analysis, the Processing Engineering Group establishes the technical basis that guides facility development from concept through detailed design. These early activities shape key decisions related to facility layout, utility requirements, procurement strategies, and ultimately how the facility will be constructed and operated

For cryogenic plants, NGL recovery facilities, compression infrastructure, and pipeline projects, these decisions influence far more than process performance alone. By identifying potential bottlenecks, evaluating system behavior, and supporting informed decision-making early in development, process engineers help reduce risk and create a clearer path toward project execution. As designs progress into detailed engineering, procurement, project controls, and EPCM activities, this technical foundation helps keep project objectives aligned with schedule, budget, constructability, and long-term operational goals.

Project Highlight

Lancaster Cryogenic Gas Plant • Fort Lupton, Colorado

As demand for processing capacity in the DJ Basin continued to grow, the Lancaster Project was developed as a new 600 MMSCFD cryogenic gas processing facility adjacent to the existing Fort Lupton Plant in Weld County, Colorado. Designed to process significant gas volumes while maximizing liquids recovery, the facility incorporates amine treating, dehydration, cryogenic processing, and residue gas compression systems within an integrated processing environment.

The facility receives raw natural gas and removes carbon dioxide through amine treating before dehydrating the gas using molecular sieve technology. Following dehydration, the gas stream is processed through cryogenic refrigeration systems to recover valuable natural gas liquids (NGLs) while producing a marketable residue gas stream for downstream transportation. The complexity of these operations requires careful coordination between process design, equipment selection, controls integration, utilities, and supporting infrastructure.

Samuel Engineering supported the project through multidisciplinary engineering and execution services, helping transform process requirements into a constructible and operable facility. The project required close coordination between process, piping & mechanical, electrical, civil & structural, and automation & instrumentation teams, while maintaining alignment with procurement activities, project controls, and overall execution objectives. With numerous engineering disciplines, vendors, and process systems working together, projects of this scale demonstrate why technical design, and project execution cannot be viewed independently. By integrating engineering, procurement, and construction management services, Samuel Engineering helps clients maintain alignment between technical objectives, project schedules, construction requirements, and future operational goals from concept through commissioning.
