About: Jim Sorensen, the Director of the Metals and Minerals at Samuel Engineering (Samuel), brings over 25 years of experience in the mining industry. With expertise across mining operations, project management, business optimization, and metallurgical process design, Jim has demonstrated strong leadership in executive, technical, and operational roles. He has successfully led major capital projects, including for Newmont Mining, and has a proven track record in improving capital project execution, cost optimization, and business outcomes.

Jim has a wealth of international experience, having worked in countries such as Australia, Ghana, Chile, and South Africa, and has contributed to over $2.5 billion in project expenditures. He is skilled in value engineering, due diligence, and M&A opportunities, and has completed numerous technical studies in compliance with U.S. and Canadian regulations. Jim is also an innovator with a patented invention and is a Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Arizona and is a member of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME).
